Between 1985 and 1987 Paco Diez travelled to Brittany to work as a lecturer in Spanish at the Secondary Teaching Center of Brest (Kerichen) and Lorient (Dupuy de Lôme). Always accompanied by a sign and the music of the harpists Triskell, Gilles Servat, and Leo Ferré, amongst other dignified representatives of the culture of their beloved Brittany. He learned this music at the age of 16 (in 1977) when he made a bicycle trip around Brittany with his French friends.

On both occasions his was soaked not only by the fine rain and extraordinary coastal and interior landscapes, but also Brittany's history, its legends, its music and everything that embodies Brittany “toujours fidèle”.

In 1989 Paco Diez and La Bazanca shared a stage in Bavaria, Germany with the admired Pòl y Hervé Queffeleant and made a proposal to organize a tour of Spain, making 1991 the first time that they appeared in Spain after having already toured half the world.

After this tour many followed, not only around Spain but also in Portugal, generating the idea of a musical Project that would revive the experiences in Brittany and different regions of Spain, principally being the two Castillas.

In 2005 after finding a path and the necessary professional conditions came “Castles in the Sea” or “Kastell ar Vor” a work that embraces very diverse melodies and instruments, the harmonic center being the harps of the Queffeleant twins, completes by the mandola, bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, and percussion of Paco.

Hervé and Paco sing old romances and love songs in Breton, Spanish, Portuguese and Ladino, in which the mix of these musical traditions naturally flourishes.

Over the years Christmas has turned into a cake with mutiple ingredients, one of which stands out beyond measure- the ferocious consumption of Anglo-Saxon style. This generates less and less satisfaction and distances us more and more from our ancestral traditions that are being relegated into oblivion. In cities, the erruption of these barbaric customs has completely eclipsed the native customs, but fortunately, although with expiration date, many are still conserved by rural medium.

From this rural medium we have nurished ourselves to offer you a Christmas monograph that we present to you, coming from a secular culture and tradition that survives in part thanks to the religious rooting of our towns, and that way the survival of community acts like the slaughtering of the pig, Christmas gifts, that continue supporting the solidarity of neighbors, though this assistance now isn't as necessary because it doesn't bring back traditional beliefs in an aparent time of wealth. Most of the Christmas carols and romances of our program come from the interior of Spain. They are simple and catchy songs, waiting for the audience to join in and learn and sing them with us. Our hope is that you teach them to the younger generation and that someday they will pass on our fragile oral tradition.

The Iberian Peninsula is without a doubt the most important ethnographic point in all of Western Europe. A part of this region, the old kingdom of Leon celebrated one of the areas of the largest cultural wealth and where only now oral tradition has dwindled.

Within this kingdom the regions of Miranda and Tras-Os-Montes along the Portuguese border with Zamora, Salamanca, Caceres, and Leon consitute in actuality one of the most important focal points of musical heritage that has remained fresh, interpreted and recreated by popular musicians through the centuries.

In the last decades of the 20th century young, well-trained interpreters who were direct heirs of tradition flourished because they were willing to tirelessly preserve and spread the rich cultural legacy left to them.

Immersed in this passionate activity one day Paulo Preto and the brothers Paulo, Alexandre y Manel Meirinhos met each other. These musicians still had the sounds of bagpipes, flute, snare, bass drum of the old musicians resonating in their ears.

In the late 90's they crossed paths with Paco Diez, a lover of the Mirandese, Alistan and Sanabrese lanas, with whom they connected perfectly through music and food, in perfect harmony with the old adage “from the belly comes the dance.”
After various musical and personal exchanges they began to colaborate forming, PACO DÍEZ & GALANDUM GALUNDAINA, a well-founded quintet of friends and musicians, lovers of all that is simple, natural, and authentic.
